Cookies are small text files that are placed on your computer by websites that you visit. They are widely used in order to make websites work, or work more efficiently, as well as to provide information to the owners of the site.

On our public-facing pages, we do not use any cookies that are essential for those pages to operate. You can use various tools to block those cookies if you wish, including adjusting your browser settings or using browser add-ons.

We do not store any data relating to the personal identity of general site visitors in cookies. We do offer to Birkbeck students and staff the option of recording some personal data in cookies on our Library website to enable access certain electronic resources, but there is a non-cookie alternative available. We also offer Birkbeck staff the opportunity to store personal details in a cookie for ease of use in our room bookings facility, and to students and staff in relation to our study skills booking system. Both of these are opt-in schemes.

Analityc Cookies

Some parts of this website use Google Tag Manager which places cookies on your computer. The information generated by these cookies about your use of this website will be transmitted to and stored by Google.

We do not use the statistical analytics tools to track or to collect personally identifiable information of visitors to this website. We do not associate any data gathered with any personally identifying information from any source as part of our use of the statistical analytics tools.

From time to time we make use of the Google Adwords Remarketing service and Google DoubleClick, both of which place cookies on your computer and will increase the likelihood of you seeing more adverts from Birkbeck on other websites that you visit.  We cannot proactively reach out to you via this method, as the whole process is entirely anonymized. Here is what Google themselves say about this:

Google uses… cookies for advertising we serve outside of Google. Our main advertising cookie is called ‘id’ and it is stored in browsers under the domain doubleclick.net. We use others with names such as _drt_, FLC, NID, and exchange_uid… In the case of our DoubleClick product, a cookie called ‘__gads’ may be set on the domain of the site you are visiting.

You can opt out of tailored Google ads and/or the DoubleClick cookie using the links shown at the bottom of this page.

Flash Cookies

Flash cookies (or ‘local shared objects’) can be used by websites to collect information about a user’s browsing habits even though the user believes that they have restricted such data collection. The use of Flash cookies on the websites is not normally permitted and is not used for tracking purposes.

Where they are used, they are only used to store settings useful to the end user (eg video volume). Further information on Flash cookies (including how to disable them) can be found on AboutCookies.org.

This is not an exhaustive or complete list of the services we use, or might use in the future, when embedding content, but these are the most common.

Social Buttons

On many of the site’s web pages, you will see ‘social buttons’. These enable users to share or bookmark web pages. There are buttons for Facebook, LinkedIn, Soundcloud, Instagram, Google +, Pinterest and Twitter.

In order to implement these buttons, and connect them to the relevant social networks and external sites, scripts from domains outside the website are used. You should be aware that these sites are likely to be collecting information about your internet browsing, including on the Georgian’s site. So, if you click on any of these buttons, these sites will be registering that action and may use that information. In some cases, if you are logged into their services, these sites will be registering the fact that you are visiting the website, and the specific pages you are on, even if you don’t click on the button.

You should check the respective privacy and cookie policies of each of these sites to see how exactly they use your information and to find out how to opt out or delete such information.
